Golf de Biarritz "Le Phare"
If you had previously taken on any of the more hilly courses in Biarritz without the aid of an electric buggy, respite is at hand. The original Biarritz layout, called Le Phare because it located just inland from the town’s main lighthouse, is a par 69 course, short at only 5,376 meters though it provides a gentle, relaxing venue. A very pleasant parkland landscape twinned with Augusta National … it is also a beautifully manicured course, though with discreet, wire like rough, a plethora of bunkers throughout the course and fast greens to contend with, Le Phare can bite back.
Don’t be fooled by the serenity and calm that greets you as it belies the true character of the course which asks some questions, especially when the wind blows … but when it’s not … a good opportunity to “open those shoulders” presents itself. It is not one of the longest courses you will ever play, though for all the reasons we have stated so far, it deserves a great deal of respect. As ever though, if the course has been unkind, solace can be sought in the smart clubhouse which provides the expected high standard of lunch and refreshments that we come to expect in France. You can’t come all this way and miss this one!!
Our opinion
“ A very pleasant and convivial place to play golf on what is the 2nd oldest course in mainland Europe. Generous fairways, with each hole very well manicured. Add to this a fantastic restaurant run by a very attentive new management team and you have a real winner ”
